More about this artwork

The "Self-Portrait" by Edouard Manet, painted between 1878 and 1879, is a compelling depiction of the artist standing confidently, dressed in a fashionable ensemble of the late 19th century. In this portrait, Manet presents himself in a full-length format, a style somewhat unusual for self-portraits of this era, which often featured the artist at work or in a more casual pose.Manet stands assertive and poised. His attire—a finely tailored beige jacket over a dark polka-dot vest, complete with a crisply knotted tie and elegant black trousers—exudes a sense of sophistication and an awareness of the fashion trends of his time. His hands are casually placed in his trouser pockets, suggesting a relaxed demeanor. Manet’s face, with a neatly trimmed beard and piercing gaze, confronts the viewer with a look that is both introspective and commanding. The backdrop of the painting is subdued, executed in dark, neutral tones that accentuate the figure of Manet. This choice of a simple background ensures that the focus remains squarely on the artist himself. The brushwork is loose and expressive, characteristic of Manet’s style, which often bridged the gap between Realism and the burgeoning Impressionist movement. This self-portrait, one of the few known self-depictions by Manet, not only serves as a personal testament of the artist but also acts as a canvas showcasing his mastery in portraiture and his ability to convey psychological depth and self-awareness. It stands as a personal and historical artifact, offering insights into both the artist’s personal identity and his cultural context.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
