More about this artwork

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's compelling artwork, "Portret van een paar als Oud-Testamentische figuren, genaamd ‘Het Joodse bruidje’" (Portrait of a couple as Old Testament figures, called 'The Jewish Bride'), created in 1922, offers a captivating glimpse into biblical romanticism through the medium of printmaking. This piece portrays an intimate moment between a couple, depicted as characters from the Old Testament, enveloped in a serene and timeless embrace. The man, adorned in flowing robes and a characteristic hat, gently holds a book which the woman, dressed in traditional attire and a necklace of beads, gracefully touches. The affection and connection between the figures are palpable. De Mesquita's use of contrasting dark and light lines lends a dramatic texture and depth to the composition, enhancing the emotional gravity of the scene. This powerful portrayal not only reflects the artist's mastery over the etching technique but also his profound understanding of human emotions and biblical themes. "Het Joodse bruidje" remains a testament to Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's unique artistic vision and his ability to convey deep narratives through stark, evocative imagery.
