More about this artwork

"A Ram and Ewe in a Landscape" is a tranquil representation of rural life captured by the artist George Morland. In this charming artwork, Morland portrays a scene filled with serene natural beauty centered around a ram and a ewe. These animals are depicted with a soft blend of earthy tones, their woolly textures coming to life under Morland's delicate brush strokes. The background features gentle trees and lush foliage that suggest a secluded, peaceful pasture, a typical setting that highlights Morland’s affinity for landscapes and rural themes. This piece is a perfect example of Morland’s ability to convey not just the physical presence of animals, but also a sense of their interaction with their environment. The meticulous attention to detail in the shading and contours of the sheep, combined with the beautifully understated landscape, creates a composition that is both realistic and idyllic.

George Morland (26 June 1763 – 29 October 1804) was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting.
