More about this artwork

"Crucify him! Crucify him" by Udo Keppler (1913) is a striking and thought-provoking illustration that intertwines biblical symbolism with social commentary. Created in the early 20th century, this work of art, now featured on our website, presents a powerful portrayal of Jesus Christ, radiating with light in front of a congregated crowd. In the scene, Jesus stands atop a pedestal, adorned with a crown of thorns and enveloped in a radiant aura that powerfully contrasts with the grim, somewhat hostile ambiance of the surrounding environment. The crowd below is depicted in a tumultuous state, with hands raised and fists clenched, bellowing for his crucifixion. The emotion in the crowd is intensely rendered; among these figures, some are marked distinctly with the word 'GREED' on their forearms, adding a layer of allegory about societal vice and collective morality. This painting not only reflects on religious and spiritual themes but also serves as a critique of human nature and social dynamics. It prompts viewers to reflect on the implications of greed, power, and public influence. Keppler's use of dark tones juxtaposed with the brilliant halo of light emanating from Christ dramatizes the ultimate sacrifice and highlights themes of redemption and condemnation.
