More about this artwork

"Star of Bethlehem" from The Flower Book by Edward Burne-Jones is a captivating circular painting that resonates with symbolic and emotional depth. In the foreground, a central female figure, likely symbolic of the Virgin Mary or an angelic representation due to the halo around her head, holds a radiant star. This star, emitting vibrant light, is possibly the Star of Bethlehem, guiding and illuminating the path. The scene around her features a barren, rocky landscape that evokes a sense of solitude and sacredness. In the background, stylized figures cloaked in robes — in hues of blue and red — appear to be journeying, perhaps representing the Three Wise Men often associated with the Nativity story. Their solemn and purposeful strides suggest they are drawn by the beacon of the star held by the central figure. The earthy colors along with the soft rendering of the light and shadows on the robes and surroundings lend a serene and mystical quality to the image. The work combines elements of Pre-Raphaelite detail and romanticism, characteristic of Burne-Jones's style, emphasizing spiritual beauty and an almost dreamlike rendition of a biblical narrative. The round format of the painting further focuses the viewer's attention on the central motif of the star, symbolizing hope and divine guidance.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
