More about this artwork

"Parisienne" (1885) by Finnish artist Albert Edelfelt is a captivating oil on canvas painting that beautifully merges realism with a touch of soft impressionism. This stunning artwork portrays a poised and elegant Parisian woman dressed in a fashionable, form-fitting dark dress adorned with delicate yellow flowers that complement her graceful demeanor. Her attire reflects the refined fashion sense of the era, emphasizing her status and feminine beauty.Edelfelt's use of light and color enlivens the composition, highlighting the subtle nuances of the woman's expression and attire. The woman is positioned against a neutral background that shifts subtly in shades, directing the viewer's focus to her and the vibrant yellow daffodils in a blue vase beside her. These flowers not only brighten the scene but also add a fresh, organic element that contrasts with her sophisticated appearance. The artist's skill in capturing textures—from the glossy sheen of her hair adorned with a tortoiseshell comb to the soft, luminous petals of the daffodils—makes the painting a visual delight. Edelfelt's portrayal of the woman is not just a mere representation of a Parisian lady of his time but an intimate glimpse into her world, reflecting the cultural vibrancy and allure of Paris in the 19th century.
