More about this artwork

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's intriguing artwork, "Fantasiefiguur temidden van een driehoek en andere vormen" (1944), encapsulates the essence of surrealism, prompting the viewers to delve into an enigmatic and dream-like world. This black and white line drawing, characterized by its minimalistic yet provocative style, invites a close examination of its abstract and geometric elements. The piece features an ethereal human-like figure enveloped within unconventional shapes and lines, demonstrating de Mesquita’s adept skill in marrying the abstract with the recognizable. The central figure's head, distinctly detailed and oriented sideways, emerges from a horizontal beam. Intricate patterns within this beam seem to suggest a flow of energy or thoughts, channeling towards or emanating from the figure. Below, a large eye attached to what appears to be a flowing form or garment further accentuates the surreal and mystical vibe of the piece, giving a sense of visual depth and intrigue. The backdrop of the artwork is stark and simple, dominated by a large triangle that intersects with other linear forms, creating a sense of both containment and expansiveness. This fusion of geometry with the more fluid, organic forms of the figure crafts a compelling juxtaposition, a hallmark in much of de Mesquita's work."Fatasiefiguur temidden van een driehoek en andere vormen" stands as a testament to Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's visionary approach to art, where each line and shape is infused with potential meanings and interpretations.
