More about this artwork

"The Rhinoceros" is a captivating woodcut created by German artist Albrecht Dürer in 1515. This intriguing artwork offers a detailed and somewhat fanciful depiction of a rhinoceros, which Dürer rendered based solely on written descriptions and a sketch from an anonymous informant. This was because the artist himself never saw the animal in person. The woodcut shows the rhino as armored with thick, patterned plates that resemble the segmented armor of a knight, reflecting the European medieval mindset through which exotic creatures were often seen. The creature's skin is intricately detailed with scales and riveted plates, showcasing Dürer's mastery of the woodcut medium. Its large, armored body and the small, detailed features like its folded skin and heavy feet, emphasize a sense of both power and a peculiar grace. An exceptionally popular piece in Dürer's oeuvre, "The Rhinoceros" was widely distributed in Europe and influenced the depiction of the animal in art and science for centuries. Despite its inaccuracies—an additional horn on its back and an overly armor-like body—the woodcut is a fascinating blend of scientific curiosity and artistic interpretation.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
