More about this artwork

Camille Pissarro, a master of Impressionism, expertly captures the essence of rural labor in his painting titled “Femme lavant du linge dans un baquet” (Woman Washing Laundry in a Tub), painted around 1889. This artwork offers a vivid glimpse into the simple yet strenuous tasks that formed the rhythm of daily life in the late 19th century. The painting depicts a woman bent over a large wooden tub, thoroughly engaged in washing laundry. Her posture and the movement of her arms suggest the physical effort involved in the task. Pissarro's use of quick, expressive brushstrokes adds a dynamic quality to the scene, emphasizing the flurry of activity.Set against a lush background of green foliage, the woman's figure is bathed in natural light, highlighting her blue blouse and darker skirt. The artist’s palette is a harmony of earth tones and greens, with splashes of blue, creating a scene that is both vibrant and soothing. The setting is informal and perhaps located in a humble backyard, indicative of Pissarro’s interest in the lives of common folk and his commitment to portraying their work with dignity and beauty. This painting not only showcases Pissarro’s skill with color and form but also reflects his social concerns and his empathy for the working class.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
