This painting invites viewers into a serene landscape scene set in the small village of Eragny, where Pissarro spent the later years of his life.In this vibrant work, Pissarro portrays a day under soft, diffuse sunlight, which suggests early autumn by the warm tones of the scenery. The composition features a quaint farmhouse shielded by lush trees, their leaves touched with hints of red and orange, indicative of the changing season. The foreground is dominated by rich, textural brushstrokes showing the earthy path and vibrant greenery that lines it.A fence gently guides the viewer's gaze toward the central figures in the painting, two women engaged in conversation. Their presence adds a human element to the landscape, enhancing the tranquil yet lively atmosphere of the village setting. The background stretches out into a tapestry of trees and hints of distant structures, suggesting the expanse of the rural environment surrounding them.True to Pissarro's style, the painting is rich with dynamic brushstrokes and a harmonious palette that captures the tranquility and simple beauty of pastoral life. Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
