More about this artwork

Max Liebermann, a pioneer of German Impressionism, captures a peaceful seaside scene in his painting titled "Kind, auf einem Esel reitend" (Child Riding a Donkey). Painted in 1901, this artwork beautifully illustrates a young girl elegantly perched atop a gentle donkey, guided by a boy walking at their side. The painting is set against the backdrop of a softly turbulent sea, with waves that delicately brush against the sandy shore. The sky above is a mixture of light blues and fluffy whites, suggesting a brisk yet sunny day. Liebermann’s use of hazy, fluid brushstrokes conveys the movement of the sea breeze and enhances the overall sense of tranquility and motion in the scene. The young girl, dressed in a pristine white dress with soft pink accents and a wide-brimmed hat, sits poised yet relaxed. Her gaze is directed downward, perhaps in contemplative observation of the ride or the mesmerizing expanse of the ocean. Beside her, the boy, clad in a simple blue shirt and cap, walks earnestly, his attention fixed on leading the donkey securely along the sandy terrain.Liebermann's choice of a soft, pastel color palette not only underscores the light-hearted and serene nature of a day by the sea but also beautifully captures the fleeting moments of childhood and companionship.
