More about this artwork

"Genoa From The Sea" by Joseph Mallord William Turner captures the ephemeral beauty of the Italian coastline from an oceanic perspective. In this painting, Turner employs his renowned soft brushwork and mastery of light to render the sublime interaction of sea, sky, and land. The atmospheric conditions of the piece bridge the transition between the Romantic and Impressionist eras, with early morning light seemingly dissolving the physical boundaries of the mountainous landscape into a dreamscape. The foreground of the work features ships gently navigating the calm waters, possibly entering or exiting the harbor of Genoa. The ghostly silhouette of the city, barely distinguishable under a wash of cerulean and pale lavender, connects man-made and natural world harmoniously.

Joseph Mallord William Turner RA, known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.
