More about this artwork

Titled "Reverie (Study for the Portrait of Frank Burty Haviland)" and created in 1914, this enchanting painting is by Amedeo Modigliani, a renowned artist known for his unique approach to form and portraiture. In this captivating work, the subject, Frank Burty Haviland, is depicted in a moment of deep contemplation. The painting portrays him with an elongated neck and a slightly inclined head, characteristics that are quintessentially Modigliani. The colors and textures in the painting are particularly striking. Modigliani uses a vibrant palette to shape the figure’s attire and the surroundings. The strokes are loose and expressive, suggesting a fusion of reality and the artist's emotional interpretation. The abstract background, with its bold blues and subtle hints of yellow, frames the figure of Haviland, enhancing the introspective mood of the piece. This painting not only captures the physical likeness of Haviland but also evokes a sense of his internal world, making "Reverie" a profound exploration of personality and mood through the medium of art.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
