More about this artwork

"Self-Portrait as Pierrot" is a compelling 1915 painting by the celebrated Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. In this introspective work, Modigliani adopts the persona of Pierrot, a character from the Italian commedia dell'arte traditionally depicted as a sad clown, entangled in unrequited love. This painting diverges from the typical jovial or comic representations of Pierrot, instead presenting a more sober, reflective depiction that may mirror the artist's own emotional state during this period. The portrait is marked by Modigliani's signature style: an elongated face, a swan-like neck, and slender, sloping shoulders, all composed with a subtle blend of earthy tones and muted greens and reds. The facial features are simplified yet expressive, with eyes that seem to gaze introspectively. The background, rendered in dark, moody greens and blacks, further accentuates the solitary figure of Pierrot, who appears both out of place and profoundly isolated.Importantly, the text "Pierrot" scribbled at the base of the canvas serves not just as a title but also connects the figure directly with the character's archetypal themes of melancholy and artistic sensitivity. This self-portrait not only provides insight into Modigliani's mastery of form and color but also into his state of mind, offering a window into the soul of an artist who frequently felt out of step with the world around him.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
