More about this artwork

"Femme aux yeux bleus" (1918), a mesmerizing portrait by the renowned Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, presents a striking and emotive representation of a woman. Admired for his unique approach to form and the elongation of his figures, Modigliani captures more than just the physical appearance of his subjects; he reveals their inner life and personality, evoking a profound emotional response from the viewer. In this painting, the subject is depicted with Modigliani's characteristic almond-shaped, ethereally blue eyes that gaze enigmatically at the viewer, set against her elongated face with delicate features. Her dark attire and simple, elegant posture further emphasize her mysterious but calm and introspective demeanor. The muted background, a blend of blues and greens, harmonizes with the overall mood, adding a sense of depth and serenity to the composition. This work is a prime example of Modigliani's skill in using art to explore and transmit the complexities of human emotion and dignity.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
