More about this artwork

Amedeo Modigliani’s painting titled "A Woman" completed between the years 1917 and 1920, is a captivating depiction that showcases the artist’s distinctive style of portraiture, characterized by elongated faces, graceful necks, and nuanced expressions. This particular piece features a woman whose countenance exudes a serene yet introspective aura, highlighted by Modigliani’s use of soft, ethereal background hues that contrast with the darker tones of her attire. The woman's face, with almond-shaped eyes that gaze languidly forward, suggests a contemplative solitude. Modigliani's signature technique of leaving the eyes devoid of detail draws the viewer into imagining the thoughts behind those muted gazes. The elongation of her neck and the subtle tilt of her head add to the elegance and poise that are typical of Modigliani’s works. His application of muted greens and blues in the background complements the earthy tones of her clothing and the brown shades of her hair. This remarkable painting not only captures the physical likeness but also the soulful depth of its subject, making it a profound piece for reflection. "A Woman" stands as a testament to Modigliani's unique ability to convey complex human emotions with simplicity and beauty.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
