More about this artwork

"Petra (1858)" by Edward Lear is a captivating work of art that unveils the serene beauty of the ancient city of Petra. At the forefront of this painting, the eye is drawn to a rustic landscape featuring rolling hills dotted with lush, round trees and scattered architectural structures, possibly remnants of once-magnificent buildings now worn by time. The gentle flow of a stream or pathway meanders through the center, drawing the viewer deeper into the scene. In the background, majestic mountains rise softly against the sky, their outlines gracefully sketched in a minimalist style that offers a sense of vast, quiet expanses. The subtle shades of brown, beige, and muted greens give the composition a tranquil, almost ethereal quality, reflecting Lear's ability to capture the essence and atmospheric mood of his surroundings.Edward Lear, primarily known for his literary nonsense in poetry and limericks, was also a gifted landscape painter. His works often depict remote and exotic locations which he visited during his extensive travels. "Petra (1858)" not only highlights Lear’s keen observational skills and delicate handling of watercolors but also his profound appreciation for the natural and ancient world.Lear’s portrayal of Petra is more than a mere geographical representation; it is an invitation to ponder the timelessness and beauty of nature intertwined with human history.

Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.
