More about this artwork

The painting "Karnac [Karnak]. Nov. 27, 1838." by David Roberts is a captivating portrayal of ancient grandeur and intricate details from one of Egypt's most famed temple complexes. Created between 1846 and 1849, this artwork provides a remarkable view into the historic site of Karnak as seen during Roberts' journey in late November 1838.The image invites viewers into a colossal passageway flanked by massive columns that bear the vibrant hieroglyphics and symbolic frescoes reminiscent of Egypt’s glorious past. These intricately decorated columns, which exhibit a palette of blues, reds, and greens, reflect the artistic and spiritual depth of ancient Egyptian culture, preserved through centuries.Roberts’ skillful composition imbues the scene with a sense of depth and scale. The towering columns and the fallen rubble hint at both the enduring legacy and the inevitable decay faced by the ancient structures. Even the positioning of the natural light seems deliberate, drawing the eye towards the central doorway, beyond which lies the mystery of the temple's inner sanctum.Visitors depicted in the scene, dressed in vibrant 19th-century attire, emphasize the continued fascination with Egyptology during Roberts’ time. These explorers and scholars move about the ruins, some in awe and others in study, connecting the past with Roberts' present.David Roberts' "Karnac [Karnak]" is not just a painting; it is a historical document and a travel back in time to when these pillars stood as silent witnesses to a civilization that shaped human history.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
