More about this artwork

Artist David Roberts' exceptional lithograph, "Dendera [Dandara], Dec. 7th, 1838" (1846-1849), offers a fascinating portrayal of the ancient beauty found at one of Egypt's timeless architectural marvels. This piece showcases the front of the Hathor Temple at Dendera, known for its richly decorated façades and intricately carved columns. In this delicate portrayal, Roberts meticulously details the grandeur of the temple column capitals, adorned with the face of the goddess Hathor. Each column is a testament to the craftsmanship and artistic dedication of ancient Egyptian culture. The ceiling, adorned with vibrant colors and intricate patterns, displays celestial motifs that would have represented the heavens and its divine inhabitants. At the temple's entrance, figures can be seen, providing both a sense of scale and a peek into daily life during the artist's time. These figures, depicted in local attire, add a touch of human presence to the majestic solitude of the temple architecture. Beyond the doorway lies a shadowy glimpse into the inner sanctuary, igniting curiosity about the mysteries that lie within. This artwork not only captures the architectural essence of Dendera but also transports viewers back in time, enabling them to appreciate the timeless beauty preserved through millennia.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
