More about this artwork

David Roberts' exquisite painting, "The Letter Writer, Cairo," created between 1846-1849, captures a moment of quiet interaction deeply rooted in the daily life of 19th century Cairo. This artwork presents a scene within an architectural setting that reflects the intricate designs typical of the region's historic interiors. In this painting, two figures are depicted—an elderly man with a thoughtful expression, dressed vividly in a red robe and a green turban, seated near an ornately decorated wall. He appears as the letter writer, possibly a scribe, holding a piece of paper and a quill pen, engaged in his craft. Opposite him, a client or perhaps a passerby, garbed in traditional white attire, attentively observes the writer's work. The setting is further enriched with a detailed depiction of a hookah at the right, adding an element of relaxed everyday life.Roberts' use of soft yet vibrant watercolors adds life to the scene, highlighting the cultural and historical elements of Cairo. This painting not only provides a glimpse into the professions and daily activities of the time but also offers insight into the social interactions and the aesthetic sensibilities within the city.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
