More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard's painting "Le Square (1917-18)" captures a serene and intimate moment in a lush urban garden, demonstrating the artist's remarkable ability to blend rich, muted tones with vibrant life. At the heart of this canvas is a tranquil depiction of a public square, framed by the dense greenery that both envelops and highlights the architectural beauty of a stately house. The building, portrayed in warm yellows and browns, features traditional shutters and a balcony that add to its character, suggesting a genteel charm. In the foreground, Vuillard places the daily life of the square into perspective. Figures, including seated women deeply engaged in their activities and a solitary child in motion, imbue the scene with a sense of peaceful, everyday life. These individuals, though rendered in a somewhat abstract form, provide a human connection to the space, suggesting the square's role as a communal gathering place. The brushwork is loose and expressive, indicative of Vuillard's post-impressionist style, creating a texture that feels both spontaneous and carefully considered. The play of light and shadow, along with the integration of natural and architectural elements, showcases Vuillard’s skill in creating compositions that are both visually captivating and emotionally resonant.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
