More about this artwork

In "Madame Vuillard Au Petit-Déjeuner À La Toquade," artist Édouard Vuillard captures an intimate moment from daily life with his unique and sensitive touch. The painting, characterized by Vuillard's deft handling of interiors, portrays his mother, Madame Vuillard, seated at a dining table. The setting is infused with a rich, textural depth, with the immediate surroundings detailed meticulously. The focal point is Madame Vuillard, depicted in a thoughtful or contemplative pose, perhaps enjoying the tranquility of her morning meal. Her figure, although not meticulously defined, resonates with a quiet presence, emphasized by the muted tones of her clothing and the shadows playing across her form. The background features a lush view through a French window, suggesting a typical urban apartment that opens to the vibrancy of foliage outside, possibly a small garden or courtyard. This verdant backdrop contrasted against the intimate interior adds a dynamic layer to the composition. The intricate ironwork of the balcony railing and the play of light through the curtains are rendered with a softness that is typical of Vuillard’s style, emphasizing his focus on texture and color over clear delineation.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
