More about this artwork

"Le Matin" (Morning) is a captivating illustration by the renowned French artist George Barbier, created between 1922 and 1926. This artwork exemplifies the elegance and refined aesthetic characteristic of the Art Deco period, often celebrated for its rich colors and luxurious motifs. The painting presents a serene and somewhat playful morning scene. At the center, a young woman is depicted arising from her sleep, draped in a sheer cloth that hints at her graceful form. She is seated on an opulent canopy bed adorned with soft pink fabrics and intricate patterns, indicating a setting of affluence and taste. Above her, a decorative oval portrait of a gentleman, framed by the canopy, watches over the scene, adding a touch of historical reverence. To her side, an older gentleman, concealing a smile behind his hand, peeks from behind the drapery, suggesting a narrative element of surprise or perhaps an intimate, lighthearted moment. A small black cat, playfully attacking one of her slippers on the ornate rug, injects a sense of liveliness and everyday charm into the composition.Barbier's use of soft pastel tones, coupled with the meticulous detail in the textiles and furniture, enhances the overall delicate and refined atmosphere of the scene. The work not only reflects the stylistic and cultural tendencies of the early 20th century in France but also serves as a delightful glimpse into the private, luxurious moments of a bygone era.
