More about this artwork

Dive into the meticulously designed world of Jan Matejko’s polychrome design, a vibrant draft for the frieze decoration titled "Fryz o motywach palmet ujętych w ukośne kraty." Crafted between 1889 and 1891, this vibrant artwork was intended for the ornamentation of the interior of St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków.In this lively design, Matejko utilizes a striking pattern of palmette motifs enclosed in diagonal lattices. The central focus of this artwork lies in its repetitive, yet harmoniously arranged, orange-gold palmettes set against a contrasting dark gray backdrop. These elegant leaf-like shapes offer a vivid display of natural form, stylized to achieve a decorative symmetry that captures the eye and enhances the architectural space. The artwork is further framed by borders in soft yellow and intense rust red, enhancing the vibrancy of the palmettes and contributing to the overall depth and richness of the design. Such use of color not only highlights Matejko’s skill in handling shades and tones but also his ability to adapt classical elements in fresco decoration to enrich a sacred space. This piece showcases Matejko’s lesser-known talent in decorative arts, distinct from his well-acclaimed historical paintings but equally profound in its artistic and historical value.

Jan Alojzy Matejko was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Rejtan (1866), the Union of Lublin (1869), the Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873), or the Battle of Grunwald (1878). He was the author of numerous portraits, a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form, and murals in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków. He is considered by many as the most celebrated Polish painter, and sometimes as the "national painter" of Poland.
