More about this artwork

William Bouguereau's painting, "Le Déjeuner Du Matin," captivates with its remarkable attention to detail and emotional depth, hallmarks of Bouguereau's artistic style. Painted in 1887, this work features a young girl seated against a softly rendered background, her expression introspective and slightly wistful. The subject is a young girl dressed in modest attire with a humble yet poignant charm. Her delicate white blouse under a grayish apron and bare feet suggest a simplicity of life, possibly reflecting the everyday experiences of many during the 19th century. The girl holds a spoon gently poised above a bowl, indicative of a morning meal, possibly porridge, which she contemplates quietly. This painting's strength lies in its capacity to convey a rich narrative through posture, expression, and props. Bouguereau's skill in rendering the textures of fabric and flesh, and the subtle interplay of light and shadow, contribute to the lifelike quality of the image. In the girl's gaze, viewers might discern reflections on her immediate surroundings or perhaps deeper, more personal thoughts, a testament to Bouguereau’s ability to encapsulate complex human emotions and moments in time.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
