More about this artwork

"Le Sommeil" (1864) by William Bouguereau is a captivating painting that beautifully illustrates a moment of serene maternal care intertwined with childlike innocence. The scene depicts a tender image of a seated woman, clad in a traditional garment with a headscarf, holding a sleeping child securely in her lap. The child, deep in slumber, exhibits a peaceful expression, nestled comfortably against the woman. To the side, another young child eagerly engages the woman, reaching up as if in mid-conversation or seeking her attention. The woman's finger placed thoughtfully upon her lips suggests a gentle call for quiet, preserving the tranquility of the sleeping child's rest.Bouguereau's skill in realistically capturing the textures of the fabric and the soft, supple skin of the children is evident. His use of light not only highlights the purity and vulnerability of the young ones but also softly illuminates the woman's thoughtful expression, enhancing the overall emotional depth of the scene. In the background, muted nature hints at a rural or pastoral setting, placing the intimate human connection within the broader context of daily life.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
