More about this artwork

Our current exhibition showcases the compelling portrait entitled "Männliches Porträt," crafted by the remarkable artist Karl Wiener in 1912. This artwork offers a fascinating glimpse into Wiener's skillful use of charcoal, creating deep, expressive lines that bring the subject to life. The painting captures the dignified profile of a man with sharp, attentive eyes that seem to carry the weight of deep thought or introspection. The clear definition in the facial features, especially around the eyes and the mustache, suggests a character of resilience and perhaps a touch of sternness. Karl Wiener's attention to detail can be especially observed in the texture of the hair and the nuanced shadows on the subject's face, which add a three-dimensional depth to the work. The warm, sepia-toned background contrasts subtly with the darker tones used for the figure, highlighting the facial features and enhancing the overall somber yet striking aesthetic of the portrait. Wiener's use of light and shadow, combined with a stark, realistic portrayal, reflects the artistic styles prevalent in the early 20th century and gives viewers a sense of the era’s artistic exploration."Männliches Porträt" is not only an example of Karl Wiener’s deft skill but also an evocative piece that resonates with the viewer on a personal level, inviting interpretations about the man’s identity and his life’s story.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
