More about this artwork

"Schwestern," which translates to "Sisters" in English, is a captivating painting by the artist Karl Wiener, created around 1930. This particular artwork depicts two women, presumably sisters, portrayed side by side, offering a profound exploration of familial bonds and individual identities within such relationships. The painting features a simple yet emotive style. The sister on the left sports a colorfully bold top that transitions from a vivid pink to a deep green, mirroring perhaps her more vibrant or extroverted personality. Her hair is styled in sleek, dark lobes and her expression carries a hint of inscrutability. In contrast, the sister on the right wears a muted brown coat, suggesting a more reserved or introspective character. Her hair and facial features are rendered in soft, earthy tones, complementing her overall demure appearance. Both figures are drawn with minimalistic yet expressive facial features, which capture a moment of quiet connection or perhaps a shared understanding, reflective of their deep, possibly complex relationship. A notable element in the artwork is the shadowy figure looming behind them. This shadow adds an element of intrigue or possibly symbolizes the shared past or the collective memories that both enrich and shadow their present lives.Karl Wiener's use of color and form in "Schwestern" brings out the essence of the characters and the subtleties of their interaction. The artwork invites viewers to ponder the layers of sibling relationships and the individual personalities that thrive within them.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
