More about this artwork

Discover the enchanting world of Henri Rousseau's "Jungle with Setting Sun," a masterpiece painted in 1910 that exemplifies the artist’s signature naive style and imaginative prowess. While Rousseau never left France, his vivid representation of the jungle springs from an exuberant imagination, derived from stories, botanical gardens, and taxidermied animals which fueled his creative vision. This painting invites viewers into a lush, verdant jungle teeming with life, meticulously rendered in great detail. Deep greens and vibrant flowers dominate the landscape, creating a thick underbrush that nearly conceals a pair of mysterious figures in its depths. At the center of this dense foliage, a large, fiery red sun sets, casting a warm glow that contrasts sharply with the cool darkness of the greenery.Noteworthy is Rousseau’s attention to the textural contrasts between the smooth, almost silken leaves and the serrated palm fronds, as well as the gentle gradation of sky at dusk. The scene is both a celebration of nature’s untamed beauty and a canvas for the viewer’s imagination, evoking the mysteries hidden within the deep thicket of an exotic jungle.

Despite never attending a formal art school, Henri Rousseau (1844–1910) is wildly recognized as a self-taught genius, who left a lasting legacy to the avant-garde movement. Rousseau practiced painting and drawing by copying artworks in the art museums of Paris in his spare time. Since he never studied anatomy and perspective at an art school, he developed a unique artistic style known as 'Naive' or 'Primitive'. His paintings are often depicted in a childish or dreamlike manner with their vivid colors, ambiguous spaces, and non-realistic scale. Most of his signature paintings portray wild animals or human figures in the jungle. His artwork was not accepted by the conservative critics so he became a member of the Parisian artistic and literary avant-garde movement where his works extensively influenced several generations of avant-garde artists and surrealists.
