More about this artwork

"Exploring the Depth of Simple Geometry – Karl Wiener’s 'Aus meinem Leben, 50 Blätter XVI' (1923)"With a compelling use of simple geometric shapes and a strikingly limited color palette, Karl Wiener's "Aus meinem Leben, 50 Blätter XVI" invites viewers into a conceptual exploration of space and tone. Painted in 1923, this piece is one of Wiener’s distinctive series exploring fundamental concepts through art.The painting presents a bold, black square that frames a smaller, vivid blue square filled with neat, uniform grids. The center structure could represent either a window or a grid-like pattern amplifying in space. The interior squares shift between shades of deep and lighter blue, suggesting depth, or perhaps the variation in intensity found in reflections of light or even in the vastness of the night sky.Wiener’s work utilizes dark outer edges that bleed irregularly into the canvas, providing a raw, textural boundary that contrasts with the neat precision of the grids. It’s this juxtaposition between the controlled geometric precision and the loosely defined borders that imbue the work with a dynamic tension. This painting not only challenges perceptions of simplicity in art but also serves as a meditation on the limits and possibilities contained within the confines of a square, making viewers pause and reflect on their interpretations of simple shapes.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
