More about this artwork

Exploring the Celestial: "Sonne, Mond und Sterne" by Karl WienerOn our gallery’s website, we are delighted to feature the enchanting painting "Sonne, Mond und Sterne" (Sun, Moon, and Stars), created by the talented Karl Wiener around 1924. This artwork captivates the viewer with its mystical representation of the night sky, blended into a harmonious scene that radiates tranquility and wonder. In this painting, Wiener masterfully employs a rich palette of blues and greens to depict a deep, star-speckled sky. A dynamic, swirling cloud dances through the composition, rendered in a lighter, vibrant hue that contrasts with the darkness of the sky. This cloud draws the eye across the canvas, adding movement and depth to the serene nocturnal tableau. The scene is illuminated by three celestial bodies - the sun, moon, and stars, each represented with distinct symbolic and visual energy. In the upper right, a bold, radiant sun bursts with white rays, symbolizing power and vitality. Opposite it, a crescent moon exudes calm and mystery, painted in a soothing shade of yellow. Scattered across the background, numerous small stars twinkle in the night, inviting the viewer to contemplate the infinite expanse of the universe."Sonne, Mond und Sterne" is not just a portrayal of a night sky; it is an artistic exploration of the cosmic balance between day and night, light and darkness. With its compelling imagery and thoughtful composition, Karl Wiener invites us to pause and reflect on the natural beauty and harmony of the cosmos.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
