More about this artwork

Karl Wiener’s “Weibliches Porträt XI” captures a moment of introspective depth, bringing viewers into an intimate encounter with the subject portrayed. This pencil drawing, marked by delicate yet assertive strokes, showcases Wiener’s expert control of light and shadow, giving life to the features of the sitter with striking realism. The portrait features a middle-aged woman whose gaze seems both weary and penetrating. Her eyes, underscored by heavy, thoughtful brows, appear to look through the canvas, suggesting a saga of untold stories and quiet resilience. The contours of her face, rendered with nuanced shading, highlight a robust character shaped by experiences. The subtle tilt of her head and the slight downturn of her lips evoke a sense of melancholy and contemplation.Karl Wiener’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in the texture of the woman’s skin and the soft folds of her garments, each pencil line adding to the overall poignancy of the portrait. "Weibliches Porträt XI" is not just a study of a face but a profound exploration of human emotion and the depth of the human spirit. This artwork invites viewers to pause and reflect, offering a lens through which to explore themes of life, endurance, and the complexities of the human experience.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
