More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's enthralling piece, titled "Ohne Titel (Frau in gelb-rotem Kleid)" from 1943, invites viewers into a world of vivid expression and poignant emotion. In this striking work, a woman stands front and center, decked in a richly hued yellow and red dress that flows dramatically against a moody, nocturnal backdrop. Her striking attire contrasts sharply with the dark, enigmatic landscape surrounding her, intensifying the sense of both allure and mystery. The woman's gaze seems to project strength and contemplation, suggesting a narrative depth beyond the visual spectacle. In the background, the night sky is animated with a crescent moon and a sprinkling of stars, adding a poetic touch to the composition. Wiener's use of texture and color variation enhances the emotional resonance of the scene, making the canvas not just a visual but a sensory experience. This painting is a brilliant example of Wiener’s ability to blend color, texture, and form to convey complex human emotions and atmospheres. The intriguing title, "Ohne Titel (Frau in gelb-rotem Kleid)," underscores the anonymity and universality of the figure, inviting viewers to imbue her with their own interpretations or experiences.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
