More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's "Ohne Titel (Haus in Landschaft)", translated as "Untitled (House in Landscape)", dating from around the 1930s, presents a striking yet serene representation of a pastoral scene rendered in a minimalist style. This exquisite piece features a single house positioned amidst a landscape, demonstrating Wiener's skillful use of simplistic forms and a limited color palette to convey depth and atmosphere. The artwork is dominated by robust horizontal and vertical lines that carve out the fields and the sky, creating a vivid contrast with the soft, rounded shapes comprising bushes and clouds. Adding a dynamic touch to the composition, a solitary wheel or circular form rests unnoticed in the foreground, perhaps symbolizing the presence or remnants of human activity.Wierner has employed a bold red for the house, making it the focal point of the composition against the cooler blue and black hues that depict the sky and the textured landscape. This use of color not only draws the viewer's eye directly to the architectural form but also enhances the overall mood of tranquility and isolation. The composition’s austerity and the rough, almost tactile quality of the print suggest the influence of German Expressionism, characterized by an emphasis on raw emotional expression over detailed physical reality. "Ohne Titel (Haus in Landschaft)" is a testament to Wiener's ability to capture the essence of a scene with minimal elements, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty in simplicity and the quiet majesty of rural life.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
