More about this artwork

"Komposition aus ‘Pflaster und Wiese’ XVIII" (1924) by Karl Wiener is a compelling exploration of texture and pattern, channeling the abstract beauty found in the mundane. This painting masterfully juxtaposes the rigidity of paved stones with the fluid, organic patterns of a meadow, suggesting a meeting of human order and natural randomness. In this work, Wiener utilizes a vibrant palette, with deep blues and earthy oranges, to delineate the contrasting textures. The cobblestone path, defined by rhythmic, repetitive shapes, guides the eye towards the theoretical horizon, bordered by an implied meadow. This meadow is depicted with more fluid, swirling patterns that counterbalance the structured cobbles, hinting at the untamed wildness found in nature. This painting stands as a visual metaphor for the intersection of human-created environments and the natural world, emphasizing both their discord and their coexistence. The precise, architectural lines of the pavement blend with the free, undulating forms of the grass, creating a rich tapestry that challenges the viewers' perception of space and the artificial boundaries between man-made and natural landscapes.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
