More about this artwork

"Head of an Elderly Man," a compelling 1928 work by artist Karl Wiener, captures the profound expression and intricate details of an elder male subject. The use of monochromatic tones accentuates the deep lines and thoughtful gaze of the man, imbuing the piece with a certain intensity and emotional depth. Wiener’s skill in portraiture is evident in the meticulous shading and realistic depiction of facial features, from the slightly furrowed brow to the penetrating eyes that seem to hold a lifetime of experiences. The textured background subtly frames the subject, focusing the viewer's attention on the striking depiction of age, wisdom, and perhaps a trace of solemnity.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
