More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's 1938 masterpiece, "Political Collage," is a compelling visual interpretation of the turbulent socio-political landscape of the time. This work, layered with newspaper clippings, texts, and iconic imagery, creates a dynamic narrative about the events and ideologies shaping the pre-World War II era.The central figure in the collage, a robotic skull, stands out against a backdrop of chaotic and overlapping newspaper texts and headlines from various countries. These snippets reference significant political figures such as Mussolini and Hitler, hinting at their influential and ominous presence during this period. Additionally, references to key events and popular sentiments, such as "In memoriam," "Armut," and "Krieg" (war), suggest a somber mood reflective of global fears and the mourning of peace. The pastiche of text and images not only embodies the confusion and turmoil experienced worldwide but also critiques the overwhelming propaganda and information that characterized the media landscape of the time. With its sharp juxtapositions and vivid use of collage, Wiener’s work invites viewers to ponder the overwhelming impact of media on public perception and the shaping of historical narratives.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
