More about this artwork

We are thrilled to present one of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s striking works, the "Poster for the exhibition for the artists’ group ‘Die Brücke’ at the Arnold Gallery Dresden" created in 1910. This vibrant poster is more than an invitation; it's an emblematic representation of the energy and pioneering spirit of the Expressionist movement. At the core of the poster is a dynamic, somewhat abstract depiction of a figure, rendered with bold contours and stark contrasts. The choice of colors – deep blacks, stark whites, and intense reds – captures attention, making the artwork stand out with its compelling visual impact. This image invites viewers into the world of ‘Die Brücke,’ a group renowned for its radical approach to art, emphasizing raw, emotive expression over realistic portrayals. The text "KG Brücke" prominently positioned at the top, and "Galerie Arnold" along with the address "Schlossstrasse" at the bottom, situates this work within its historical and geographical context. Kirchner's signature is stylishly included at the lower left, ensuring artistic acknowledgment. This poster is not merely an advertisement but a historical artifact that encapsulates the essence of an era where art was rapidly evolving. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s work for the ‘Die Brücke’ exhibition at Gallery Arnold invites us to reflect on the transformative power of art and its enduring impact on societal and cultural currents.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
