More about this artwork

"Sich sonnende Badende" (Sunbathing Bather) is an expressive artwork by the notable German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, created in 1909. In this painting, Kirchner utilizes a minimalist, yet bold, approach to depict the figure of a bather luxuriating in the warmth of the sun. The use of vibrant green and black forms artfully abstracts the scenery, echoing the simplicity and relaxation of the subject. The painting showcases Kirchner’s distinctive style, characterized by the stark contrast and dynamic forms. The green, likely representing the grassy surroundings, contrasts sharply with the black contours outlining the human form, helping to emphasize the languid pose and the serene environment. This artwork is an excellent example of Kirchner’s contribution to Expressionism, focusing on emotional experience rather than physical reality."Sich sonnende Badende" invites viewers to a moment of tranquility and reflection, evoking feelings of peace and the simple joy of a moment under the sun.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
