More about this artwork

This artwork by Albrecht Dürer is a fine example of his mastery in engraving, and it depicts Saint Sebastian, a popular Christian saint and martyr. The rendition is both detailed and emotive, capturing the figure of Saint Sebastian tied to a column. Dürer's skill in rendering the human form is evident in the precise anatomy and the expression of serene endurance on Sebastian's face.Saint Sebastian is shown almost in full figure, with arrows piercing his body, which is a common theme in depictions of him. Despite the arrows and his apparent suffering, his expression conveys a sense of calm and resignation. He is depicted with curly hair, lightly clad in a draped cloth around his lower body. This portrayal not only emphasizes his martyrdom but also highlights the beauty and resilience of the human spirit in the face of suffering. The setting includes subtle details like the column to which Sebastian is bound and the natural landscape in the background, which includes rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. The monogram 'AD' of Albrecht Dürer is visible in the lower left corner, marking his authorship of this sensitive and powerful piece.Overall, Dürer's engraving of Saint Sebastian is a poignant representation that combines technical prowess with a deep understanding of religious iconography and human emotion.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
