More about this artwork

This painting by Mary Cassatt, titled "Woman and Child," captures an intimate and tender moment between a woman and a young child. The artwork, executed with a soft yet expressive brushwork, portrays the woman in a simple, light-colored dress, gently embracing the child. The child, with a somewhat flushed cheek and an expression of comfortable ease, is dressed in a striped garment that adds a playful contrast to the otherwise subdued color palette. The background is loosely defined with warm tones, possibly suggesting a cozy indoor setting, which focuses the viewer’s attention on the figures. The use of light and shadow on their faces enhances the emotional depth of the scene, highlighting the close bond shared between the two.Cassatt's skill in rendering the textures of clothing and skin, as well as her ability to capture the essence of familial love, is evident. This painting exemplifies her profound insights into the private and serene moments of daily life, especially among women and children. The overall composition, enriched with emotional warmth and a hint of impressionistic style, invites viewers to reflect on the universal theme of motherly affection.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
