More about this artwork

In this painting, a woman is portrayed with a contemplative or introspective expression. Her hair is styled in a loose, flowing manner, tinted with shades of red and brown, partly covered by what appears to be a light, transparent scarf or veil. The woman's eyes are large and expressive, accented by thin, delicate eyebrows and neatly drawn eyelids. Her lips are slightly parted, adding to her thoughtful demeanor. She wears a simple garment, which is sketched with minimal but effective lines suggesting a soft, draping fabric. The background is sparse, maintaining focus on her figure and facial features. The artist's signature is visible at the bottom right of the painting.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
