More about this artwork

The Hills Near Port Madoc, painted by Sidney Richard Percy in 1861, captures a serene and evocative landscape located in Wales. In this magnificent composition, Percy presents a sweeping vista bathed in the ethereal light of a setting sun. The detailed brushwork highlights a foreground populated by cows grazing calmly on the grassy hillside. A figure, possibly a shepherd, is seated on a rock, gazing contemplatively across the expansive scene. The striking element of this painting lies in the dramatic and fiery sky, where clouds swell with shades of crimson and gold, suggesting warmth radiating from the sunset. The juxtaposition of the vibrant sky against the cool and shadowy landscape below enhances the depth and emotion conveyed by Percy. The distant hills recede under the weight of this majestic sky, suggesting a vast, open space that is simultaneously inviting and mysterious.Sidney Richard Percy, known for his meticulous landscapes, uses light and shadow to create a sense of time and place that is deeply immersive.
