More about this artwork

"Die Verkündigung" (The Annunciation), painted during the tumultuous years of 1943-1944 by Karl Wiener, is a captivating expressionist work that delves into themes of revelation and human experience. Wiener's unique interpretation of the annunciation transcends traditional religious iconography, presenting a fresh, emotionally compelling narrative. At the center of the composition stands a figure with arms wide open, enveloped in a radiant yellow and blue robe that seems to merge them with the celestial. This central figure, perhaps representing an angel, is surrounded by a group of onlookers whose faces, painted in muted tones of blues, greys, and browns, contrast vividly with the luminosity of the central figure. Their expressions, varying from contemplative to seemingly bewildered, add a profound layer of human emotion and reaction to the divine event. The use of color in this painting is notably expressive. Golden rays that appear to emanate from the figure suggest a divine or supernatural presence, illuminating the scene and casting dramatic shadows. This play of light and shadow not only enhances the spiritual ambiance but also creates a visual metaphor for enlightenment and revelation."Die Verkündigung" by Karl Wiener is more than just a religious depiction; it is a powerful commentary on the interaction between the divine and the mundane, the known and the mysterious. It invites viewers to consider their own moments of revelation, big or small, in the tapestry of everyday life.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
