More about this artwork

This painting by George Stubbs, titled "Turf, With Jockey Up, At Newmarket," captures a serene scene featuring a single jockey mounted on a racehorse. The background of the painting is a flat, open landscape that conveys the quiet, expansive atmosphere typical of the Newmarket racecourse in England, a location famous for its association with thoroughbred horse racing. The horse, depicted in a standing pose with one front leg slightly lifted, showcases Stubbs' exceptional ability to render equine anatomy and poise accurately, a skill for which he is renowned. The brown horse contrasts subtly against the mostly overcast sky and soft, muted greens of the grass, creating a focal point that draws the viewer's attention. The jockey, dressed in traditional racing attire, holds the reins gently and appears calm and composed. This portrayal not only emphasizes the bond between the horse and its rider but also reflects the elegance and stillness of the moment before the intensity of a race.To the right, the partial view of a large, brick building adds a sense of solidity and permanence to the scene, balancing the expansive openness of the landscape. The simplicity and clarity of Stubbs' composition, combined with his meticulous attention to detail, create a timeless capture of horse racing culture in the 18th century, highlighting its grace and disciplined beauty.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
