More about this artwork

This is an intriguing portrait by Amedeo Modigliani, known for his distinct style that emphasizes elongated forms and an ethereal aura. The painting titled "Madame Kisling" showcases a female figure with characteristic features of Modigliani's work: a long neck, oval face, and almond-shaped eyes which are strikingly blank here, almost ghostly in their expression. The subject's skin is rendered in pale tones against which her red lips stand out vividly. Her attire includes a dark blazer with a white shirt and a red tie, suggesting a blend of masculinity and femininity in her appearance. The background is abstract, with blocks of muted colors that do not distract from the subject. Modigliani's typical use of earthy, subdued colors like browns, blacks, and ochres provides a stark contrast to the skin tones and the striking red of her tie, drawing further attention to the face and the clothing's neckline. The composition is centered and straightforward, capturing the essence of the subject's personality and presence through the artist's unique visual language.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
