More about this artwork

The painting depicts a seated woman, positioned slightly left of center, with her body angled towards the viewer. She has dark, shoulder-length hair and a calm, contemplative expression. Her eyes are downcast, and her lips are gently closed. She is dressed in a light-colored, sleeveless dress that falls loosely around her form, exposing her arms and knees. Her hands are clasped together over her knees, suggesting a relaxed, yet thoughtful posture. The background is a mix of earthy and muted tones, with hints of green and blue, which provide a somewhat indistinct setting that focuses attention on the figure herself. On her right, there appears to be a suggestion of a table or surface with a blurry object that might be a bowl of fruits. The brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of Modigliani's style, creating a sense of depth and texture throughout the composition.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
