More about this artwork

The painting portrays a seated figure, dressed in a patterned jacket of reds and browns, with a vivid, multicolored necktie and a hat tipped forward over the forehead, casting a shadow across the face. The figure's posture is contemplative, resting one arm on a knee while the other supports the body leaning forward. The backdrop is abstract, utilizing a mosaic of blues, ochres, and creams that create a textured environment around the figure. The brushstrokes are expressive and heavily textured, lending a sense of depth and emotion to the scene.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
