More about this artwork

The painting "Fish" by Édouard Manet is a vivid and compelling still life that portrays an array of seafood items arranged on a dimly lit table. At the center, there are two prominently featured fish, one with a red head possibly indicating it's a red gurnard, and alongside it, another white-bodied fish. These main subjects are very detailed, showing Manet's adept handling of texture and naturalistic color, bringing out the moist and shiny appearance typical of fresh seafood. To the left, a cluster of oysters adds variation in texture and color, enhancing the overall richness of the composition. A dark eel slithers near the edge of the table, adding a dynamic curve that contrasts with the otherwise static arrangement of the other elements. On the far right, there's a large, reflective copper pot, partially closed, which catches flames of light on its body, suggesting the presence of a nearby light source outside the immediate view of the painting. This element not only balances the composition but also adds a domestic or kitchen-like context to the scene.A lemon, strategically placed near the center, not only introduces a bright spot of color in the predominantly neutral palette but also evokes the culinary use of the fish, inviting the viewer to think about the preparation and consumption of the seafood depicted.Manet's brushwork is loose and expressive, contributing to a sense of immediacy and realism.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
