More about this artwork

"Portrait of a Lady" by Édouard Manet is an exquisite painting that captures the side profile of a fashionable woman. The lady in the portrait is adorned in an elegant, dark hat with feathers, lined with a light, contrasting detail that catches the eye. Her face is depicted with delicate, refined features, highlighted by the soft pink of her cheeks and the subtle redness of her lips, which suggests a gentle yet composed demeanor. Her earring, a small but detailed touch, adds a glint of opulence to her portrait. The clothing visible in the painting includes a dark outer garment, possibly a coat, overlaid by what appears to be a lighter scarf or a decorative collar with a checked pattern. This combination of attire reflects a high sense of fashion and class typical of Manet's subjects. The overall texture and quick, visible brushstrokes of the painting give it a sense of immediacy and intimacy, characteristic of Manet's style. This portrait not only showcases the beauty and elegance of the subject but also reflects Manet's skill in capturing the essence and style of the period.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
